As a citizen of the United States I am required to have a valid passport when traveling out of the country. However, as you can see from my blog post today, this isn’t always the case for citizens of other countries. Knowing the different visa requirements for travellers is an important part of understanding the rules that govern international travel.
What is the Visa Waiver Program?
The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) enables citizens of certain countries to visit the United States for tourism or business without a visa. To be eligible for the VWP, a traveler must meet two requirements: first, they must be a citizen of one of the participating countries; and second, they must have a valid passport that is not about to expire. Applying for a visa may still be necessary if you plan to stay in the U.S. for longer than 90 days. For example, if you are a citizen of France and you want to stay in the U.S. for six months, you will need to apply for a visa.

How do you qualify for a Visa Waiver?
If you are a citizen of one of the 53 countries that are part of the European Union (EU), you will not need a visa to visit New Zealand. However, if you are travelling as a tourist, you will need to apply for a Visa Waiver. The visa waiver requires that your passport have at least six months validity remaining and that you have no criminal convictions.
To qualify, you will also need to provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover your stay and that you will not be a burden on the New Zealand economy. You may also be required to provide proof of health insurance and evidence that you have enough money to cover your stay should you need to leave the country quickly. The application process is easy and can be done online. Once submitted, your application will be assessed and, if approved, you will receive an email notification containing details of how to collect your visa from the New Zealand Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
What are the visa requirements for an American citizen in New Zealand?
If you are a U.S. citizen, the short answer is that you don’t need a visa to visit New Zealand. However, there are some restrictions that may apply if you’re visiting for tourism or business purposes.
